A Message from the President and CEO of CGA (Issue 1, 2014)

Timothy M. Egan - President

You may be reading this on a train using energy to get you to your destination. You may be reading it on your tablet or another electronic device charged with energy. You are (hopefully) reading it in a warm environment, kept comfortably away from the cold, thanks to energy. The point is, we use energy all the time in virtually everything we do. As Canadians, we have an implicit understanding that energy services for mobility, for electricity, and for heating are key to our quality of life and economic well-being. Our geography and climate tend to bring these things into focus. Making that understanding explicit – and building on it to realize the even greater opportunity our energy system provides us going forward – is a bigger thing to get our heads around.

At CGA we have launched “Energy/Energie” as our new magazine to help with the task. It is intended to look at the role of energy – and natural gas in particular – in Canada. We want to profile key energy players in Canada and abroad, to review key issues and debates around energy, to delve into the politics of energy – in sum we want to help the reader become better informed about energy. To assist with the task, we are engaging respected columnists, reporters and analysts to conduct the interviews and write the stories. And to make the task more pleasant we offer a look and format that we hope you find appealing (full disclosure: we thank Porter Airlines for their magazine which stimulated design thoughts on ours).

The Canadian Gas Association (CGA) is a trade association dedicated to advancing the interests of the natural gas delivery industry. Everyone has biases, and ours are for natural gas. But we see our product and our services in the context of the bigger energy system that is so important to Canada, and we hope this magazine makes that point. This is a new venture for us, and we welcome all comments and suggestions. We hope you find it useful, and we thank you for taking the time to have a look.
