A Message from the President and CEO of CGA (Issue 1, 2016)

Timothy M. Egan - President

Welcome to the first Energy issue of 2016! Since our last publication in 2015, the environment and the economy nexus has gained greater public attention. For us, it highlights even more the importance of natural gas as a clean and affordable energy solution for Canadians. In the pages that follow, we have an interview with the Honourable Jim Carr, the new Minister of Natural Resources Canada, where he provides his views on the important energy issues facing Canada today. From there, we go on to look at British Columbia’s fast growing liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry as Diane Francis’ interviews David Keane, President of the British Columbia LNG Alliance. With BC still front and centre we take a closer look at a successful LNG operator, FortisBC, and interview the company’s President and CEO, Michael Mulcahy, about the role of natural gas in the province and how the company has become a leader in market development for the natural gas distribution industry. Turning to the U.S., our resident Canadianist, Christopher Sands gives his perspective on Canadians’ attitudes toward energy and resource development. And as always, our political commentators offer their views on issues that matter to our readers, this time commenting on what a national climate strategy should look like given the Prime Minister’s commitment at COP21. Finally, and new to this year’s lineup, we are happy to feature the invaluable work by utility employees at the community level. 2016 promises to be an exciting time for energy in Canada. The articles that follow offer a glimpse into that, with (as always) a particular perspective on the role of natural gas. May you all have lots of Energy!
